Vintage High Street — Redefining Urban Space Through Adaptive Reuse

Haldwani, Uttarakhand · 2017 · Adaptive Reuse

Here an old school building was repurposed as a market. The classrooms were converted into showrooms, and the ground floor was connected to the upper floors by puncturing the existing floor slabs. The school grounds were used to create a drive-thru, and parking for frequenting tourists. This adaptive reuse helped drive the course of urban expansion in Haldwani. The project created the most expensive rental space in the whole region, virtually without building anything new. This provided a significant return on investment for the client, and it also benefited the community by providing a freely accessible public space. The public space, which was once the basketball court of the school, is now a central gathering place for the community.
