Rudrapur, Uttarakhand · 2020 · Residential
This residence turns the industrial character of its surroundings into a deliberate design language— where structural ingenuity, repurposed materials, and passive systems work together as a unified whole. The defining structural move is a set of slanted columns that converge onto a single central foundation, eliminating the need for four separate footings, reducing cost, and creating a dramatic sculptural element whose shadows animate the interior walls. The raised foundation plinth is reinterpreted as a built-in dining table, merging structure with furniture. The material palette is unapologetically raw— exposed concrete ceilings, scrap metal mural gates, broken tile outdoor flooring, and industrial waste repurposed throughout the interiors and exteriors. Terrace railings, bent at a precise 35-degree angle, double as comfortable benches— form and function resolved in a single gesture. Passive ventilation is achieved through a central slab opening that channels rising hot air upward naturally. Muted wall tones, intimate lighting, and minimalist artwork frame an interior that is industrial in texture yet considered in atmosphere— a home that is unmistakably of its place.
